Yahweh
Self-Existing, Eternal God
Can you imagine what it was like before the universe was created? It’s difficult for our finite human minds to even fathom. The Bible makes it clear that God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit existed before the universe was formed (John 1:1; Genesis 1:2).
God has always been. He is self-existent and eternal. There has never been a time when He didn’t exist. God references this amazing quality about Himself when He appeared to Moses in blazing fire from the midst of a bush. God said to Moses in Exodus 3:14, “I AM WHO I AM;…“Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’” The names “I AM WHO I AM” and “I AM” come from the word “Yahweh” or “YHWH” in Hebrew. “Yahweh” is used to describe God’s self-existing, self-sustaining, and eternal nature.
Not only is God the sustainer of His own life, but He is the creator and sustainer of all life. Nothing exists apart from Him. Colossians 1:16 tells us, “For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him.” Acts 17:28 also tells us that it is in Him that we live, move, and exist.
Not only did Yahweh give us physical life, but He also made a way for us to experience eternal life with Him through the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross. If you don’t already know and have a relationship with the self-existing creator and sustainer of all life, you can come to know Him today.
YAHWEH, self-existing creator and sustainer of all life, we are in awe of You. We thank You that You not only gave us physical life, but You also made a way for us to have eternal life. We love You.

Praise YAHWEH
“God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM”; and He said, “Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’”
Jehovah (YHWH) is one of the primary names of God. Scholar Charles Ryrie explains:
- I AM WHO I AM, the inner meaning of Yahweh – “I am the ONE who is” – emphasizes God’s dynamic and active self-existence.
- Yahweh, literally, YHWH, is the most significant name for God in the Old Testament, occuring 6,823 times in the O.T. and is especially associated with God’s holiness, hatred of sin, and gracious provision of redemption.
When we read, “God said to Moses, ‘I AM WHO I AM’; and He said, ‘Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you,” we can’t help but be reminded that just as God sent Moses to rescue the Israelites from bondage in Egypt; God sent Jesus to rescue us from bondage to sin. Yahweh, a holy, loving, redemptive, rescuing God. How we praise Him!
YAHWEH, self-existent, dynamic I AM, we marvel at Your holiness and love for us. We worship You with abounding thankfulness on our hearts for who You are and all You have done.

If you’re not signed up for my E-Devotional, you can sign up HERE. For those who already receive it, be sure to read it. It won’t be my typical newspaper column. 🙂
And NOW – for our 365th DAY of PRAISE! Believe it or not, I’m having trouble deciding which to post. I still have SEVERAL that I haven’t shared! However, I believe we’ll do the oh so important Yahweh.
“This is the account of heaven and earth when they were created, at the time when Yahweh made earth and heaven.”
Genesis 2:4
According to scholar Charles Ryrie, YAHWEH is the most significant name for God in the OT. Here is what He says about it. Yahweh,” literally “YHWH,” has a twofold meaning: the active, self-existent One (since the word is connected with the verb meaning ‘to be,’ (Ex 3:14); and Israel’s Redeemer (Ex 6:6). The name occurs 6,823 times in the OT and is especially associated with God’s holiness, His hatred of sin, and His gracious provision of redemption.” Isn’t it exciting that YAHWEH, our redeemer, who is holy beyond what we can envision and who hates sin, is our gracious redeemer!
All PRAISE to YOU, YAHWEH, active, self-existent ONE! I sing Your praises and give You honor and praise now and forever! Amen!
Lord God, thank You for the opportunity to better know You in 2013. Now lead us in the ways You want us to go so that we better reflect Your name and bring You honor. Amen.
