Isaiah 49:2
Piercing Word
Have you ever been built up or torn down by someone’s words? No doubt, people’s words have an impact on our lives. So do Christ’s words.
In Isaiah 49:2, the words of the “Servant of the Lord,” who is understood to be Jesus, are compared to a sharp sword. “He has made My mouth like a sharp sword,…;”
The imagery of Jesus’ words being like a sharp sword is also found in other places in the Bible. Hebrews 4:12 tells us, “For the Word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.”
Jesus’ Words are like a sharp sword in that they cut straight to the heart, to our thoughts and intentions.
Jesus’ Word is also a sharp sword in the believer’s defense against sin and the enemy (Psalm 119:11, Ephesians 6:10-17).
As believers, do we use the power and authority of God’s Word to transform us? Do we delight in His Word? (Psalm 1:1-3)? Are we doers of His Word (James 1:23-25)? Christ, His Word, a sharp sword, is vital to our lives.
Lord, I praise You, a SHARP SWORD. Transform me according to Your living and active Word.

Whose Side Are You On?
Sides. Children learn the concept of “sides” at a young age. They’re on this side or that side of the field depending on their team. They learn about historical battles and those who fought on each side. The Bible tells us that there are spiritual sides. God is on one side and the devil is on the other side. They are battling over our souls.
Ephesians 6:16 tells us how to extinguish the devil’s flaming arrows. We’re reminded that we’re not in this battle alone. Our Heavenly Father is the Captain of our side. He wins the war against Satan because of Jesus who Isaiah 49:2 describes as a Select Arrow sent straight from God’s quiver to destroy the works of the devil and save our soul.
“He has also made Me a select arrow, He has hidden Me in His quiver” (Isaiah 49:2).
Take courage. You may be in a skirmish, but if you’re a follower of Christ you’re on the right side.
Lord Jesus, God’s SELECT ARROW, thank You for coming to earth to destroy the works of the devil and take us to Your side. We love and praise You!

Praise to SELECT ARROW
“He has also made Me a select arrow,
He has hidden Me in His quiver.”
Commentator David Guzik explains this description of Jesus in this way: “The Messiah prophetically proclaims that He is like a carefully made and polished ARROW in the service of the LORD, ready to be used at the right time.”* In other words, at the right time, God sent Jesus forth. Commentator Matthew Henry adds regarding Christ being a Select Arrow: “furnished Him with every thing necessary to fight God’s battles against the powers of darkness, to conquer Satan, …”** Christ being a Select Arrow, as with every description of God’s attributes, increases our appreciation and mindfulness of the fulness of His character; giving us more reason to meditate on Him in wonder and awe.
Lord Jesus Christ, SELECT ARROW of the Lord, thank You for coming forth from Your Father and fighting the powers of darkness; securing our salvation and freedom. We love and praise You!
SELECT ARROW

Isaiah 49:2
Commentator David Guzik explains this description of Jesus in this way: “The Messiah prophetically proclaims that He is like a carefully made and polished arrow in the service of the LORD, ready to be used at the right time.”* And, that God did! At the right time, He sent Jesus forth. Commentator Matthew Henry adds: “furnished him with every thing necessary to fight God’s battles against the powers of darkness, to conquer Satan, and bring back God’s revolted subjects to their allegiance, by his word…”**
Lord Jesus Christ, SELECT ARROW of the Lord, I praise You for the work You have done to secure our salvation!
